Friendsfavz 3 Minute Mini
In Episode 14, Mary Jane Landau introduces the audience to her Salted Carmel Meringues from her catering business, Catering with Mary Jane Landau. She started in the hospitality business in the ’80s and became the co-owner and catering director of Landau’s restaurant in Bellevue, then moved on to own At Home Cooking School in the ’90s. Mary Jane has over 30 years of experience in the catering arena and loves helping people create special events. It was such a pleasure to have her visit with us and treat one of the ladies in the audience to one of her fabulous desserts.
Mary Jane catered a bridal shower for me and I was really impressed with her customer service and delicious food. Several weeks ahead of the actual event, she came to my home to see where and how I was going to set up the shower, and we brainstormed ideas for a menu. Even though I didn’t have anything in mind yet, she asked me about who was attending and how the shower would flow, then suggested several items she thought might work well. She worked within my budget and came up with some wonderful afternoon lunch ideas: Roast Carrot Harrisa, Peppered Chevre on Crostini, Roast Chicken Salad Tarts, Love Knott Rolls and Prawns Mango with Avocado salad cups. Everything was freshly made and the presentation was very nice and ready to place on my decorated table in time for the guests to arrive.
The best part was the heavenly desserts she provided, pink rosebud meringues, sweetheart shortbreads, and my favorite: Strawberries Balsamico with Cream Monte Carlo!
I was so impressed with Mary Jane and the fantastic food she creates, I ordered appetizers for our filming event with Girly Girl Wines. The presentation was so beautiful and the appetizers were incredibly tasty! Definitely a big hit with the ladies and everyone was hoping their number would be called for the drawing for the dessert.

“Martedi” means “Tuesday” in Italian, and the name has a special meaning for the Miglino brothers, who have a tradition of gathering together on the second Tuesday of each month for wine and pasta. Joseph Miglino is the winemaker at Martedi Winery, and he and his brother John are the primary owners of this Italian-inspired-winery, in Woodinville WA.
They specialize in Italian varietals, and their signature wine is a spirited Sangiovese! Joseph has a long and varied career in the wine industry and wine making. He is going to share his story and some of his knowledge of the nuances of wine with us on this episode.

What is a Vlog and what is a Vlogger Fair?
I was wondering the same thing a short time ago. To those of us of a more mature age who are just catching up to the trends, it is a video blog.
Who is vlogging you ask? Well, at this fair the popular personalities are under 40, single or families and they are a hit with the young female generation.
I was amazed and intrigued by the following of these You Tube successes. The majority of attendees at the vlogger fair, a two day event with vendors and you tube personalities, were young, female and very familiar with all the names of the vloggers who were going to be speaking. Many of the You Tube people have vlogs about themselves and their families, kind of like a reality show but without all the drama. They talk about family, their daily lives and interesting things happening around them. Some vlogs have a theme, like make-up tutorials, fashion or crafting, but those types of video blogs were not represented at the fair.
I think the vlogs by Chris Pirillo, Shay Carl, Joey Graceffa, Its Judys life, and many others create a sense of community for many of their followers and invite people to be a part of their lives. I felt they are a much better set of folks to follow than many of the movie, TV, and music celebrities many follow. It was a safe, fun, creative environment for young people to be attending.
If you like wine, listen in as I talk about my new favorite wine store with the biggest selection around.
Happy trails, Karen Rae
Guest Blogger! Craig here, Karen’s husband. She asked me to be the guest blogger tonight because I am both handsome and witty (hahaha – this will only get in if I can hit enter before she edits). Tonight we found ourselves alone (again) as our oldest son is off to college and our youngest is off on another of his many events, friends, hobbies, or all of the above (today indoor “skydiving” with his Uncle at IFly – a great Christmas present – then off to church). Anywhooo….. that left the two of us alone at home, so my lovely wife set a very nice “table” at the Kitchen Island, including her Glassy Baby’s, with their individual bling things, place mats, napkins… the whole deal. And, we enjoyed a wonderful steak dinner (meat compliments of my In-Law’s who gave us a selection of Kansas City Steak Company steaks for Christmas), accompanied by a small bottle of 2008 Decorum Red Table Wine – made with love and care by Vinters (and our special friends) Drew and Deb Lowe. Drew is a long time local wine maker, having started making wine with his friend and neighbor Gary Bunker probably 15 years ago or more (Wish Willing Cellars). That fruitful partnership (witty alert!) ended due to both of them moving far away from each other. Drew has continued on making fine wines with his wife Deb under the label Decorum. I especially like it when I compliment his wines and that results in a few more bottles coming my way! Tonight he responded to my text message with a promise of a case of the liquid gold…. And, I know Karen has Drew and Deb on her list of future guests, not only for their wine making, but also for their other creative talents such as making cheese, fruit jam and jellies, Lemoncello (yum!), and expertise in multi-dimensional nuclear physics (OK – not the last one, but I was trying to come up with something that makes them sound cooler). So, stay tuned for a more in depth dissertation of their talents in an upcoming episode…. That’s all from me tonight, as I need to get back to the dishes, which is a cheap price to pay for a wonderful “Dinner for Two” with my beautiful, loving wife.
